In the European Parliament the Kokoomus group consists of representatives Ville Itälä, Eija-Riitta Korhola and Sirpa Pietikäinen, who were elected for the period of 2009-2014 in June 2009.
Kokoomus Biggest in Euro Elections
Kokoomus was the biggest party in Finland in the Euro elections, as it received 23,2 % of the votes. In total Kokoomus received 385 610 votes. Next Euro elections will take place in June 2014.
Kokoomus now has three representatives in the European Parliament. The elected candidates are: Ville Itälä (65 916 votes), Sirpa Pietikäinen (51 446 votes) and Eija-Riitta Korhola (51 211 votes).
The new mandate for Euro parliamentarians for the period 2009-2014 commenced 14.7.2009. Chairman of the Kokoomus MEP delegation is Ville Itälä.
Kokoomus Continues as a Strong European Opinion Leader
Kokoomus representatives in the European Parliament Ville Itälä, Eija-Riitta Korhola and Sirpa Pietikäinen are members of the European Peoples Party (EPP) group, which is the largest and most influential political group in the European Parliament. It consists of 297 members of Parliament from among total 736 members of Parliament after the elections in 2009.
The Center-Right European Peoples Party (EPP) is the first multinational political party founded on European level. The European Peoples Party is strongly represented in the Council of the European Union. In 2009 the EPP endorsed José Manuel Durão Barroso from Portugal for the second time for the position of President of the European Commission. Barroso is the 11th and current President of the European Commission.
